Green Pool Recovery, Algae Treatment & Pool Clean-Up
Sunshine Coast Pool Patrol provides professional green pool recovery, algae treatment, water testing, chemical balancing and pool clean-up services across the Sunshine Coast.
Green pools are usually caused by low chlorine, failed equipment, poor circulation, blocked baskets, stormwater, heavy debris, missed maintenance or a chlorinator that is not producing properly. We identify what has caused the pool to turn, treat the water correctly, support filtration, clean the pool where required and help bring the water back under control.
Why pools turn green
What Causes a Green Pool?
A green pool usually means algae has taken hold because the water is no longer being sanitised, circulated or filtered properly. Sometimes the cause is obvious, like a pump failure, low water level or chlorinator fault. Other times the pool may turn after rain, storms, heavy debris, holidays or missed maintenance. Sunshine Coast Pool Patrol checks both the water and the equipment so the treatment is based on what is actually happening.
A green pool needs more than just “throwing chlorine in”.
If the pump is not circulating, the filter is blocked, the chlorinator is not producing, or the water level is too low, the pool can turn green again even after treatment. That is why proper green pool recovery includes water testing, algae treatment, filtration support and equipment checks.
Pump or Circulation Failure
If the pump stops running, loses prime or does not circulate water properly, the pool can quickly lose chlorine control. Poor circulation allows algae to spread and makes chemical treatment less effective.
Chlorinator Not Producing
A chlorinator fault, dirty salt cell, low salt level, incorrect output or poor run time can reduce chlorine production. Once chlorine drops too low, algae can take hold quickly.
Low Water Level
If the pool water drops below the skimmer, the system can draw air and stop circulating properly. This can reduce filtration, reduce chlorine movement and lead to green or cloudy water.
Holidays or Missed Maintenance
When a pool is left without testing, balancing, basket emptying or equipment checks, chlorine can fall away. Pools often turn green while owners are away or after servicing has been missed.
Rain, Storms & Heavy Debris
Stormwater, leaves, dirt and organic debris can disrupt water balance and consume chlorine. After bad weather, the pool may need testing, chemical correction, cleaning and filtration support.
Blocked Baskets or Dirty Filter
Blocked skimmer baskets, pump baskets or dirty filters restrict water flow. Poor flow makes it harder to remove algae, circulate chemicals and keep the pool water clear.
Our green pool recovery process
How Sunshine Coast Pool Patrol Treats Green Pools
Every green pool is different. Some pools need a chlorine shock and filtration. Some need algaecide, brushing and extended filter run time. Others need flocculant and a vacuum to waste when the water is full of fine suspended algae. We choose the treatment based on the pool condition, water chemistry, equipment and how much algae or debris is present.
Test the Water
We test the pool water properly before treatment so we can understand chlorine demand, pH, alkalinity, stabiliser and overall water condition.
Check Equipment
We check pump operation, filtration, baskets, chlorinator, salt cell and visible flow issues so the pool can actually recover after treatment.
Treat the Algae
Depending on the pool, treatment may involve chlorine shock, algaecide, flocculant, brushing, filtration support or a staged recovery plan.
Brush, Filter or Vacuum
We help remove algae from surfaces and water. Some pools filter clear, while others need a vacuum to waste once dead algae settles.
Rebalance the Pool
Once the pool clears, we rebalance the water so the pool is cleaner, safer and more stable moving forward.
Not all green pools should be treated the same way.
A pool with a failed pump needs a different approach to a pool that only has low chlorine. A pool full of suspended dead algae may need a floc and vacuum to waste, while a lighter green pool may clear through treatment and filtration.

Green pool treatment options
Different Green Pools Need Different Treatments
The right recovery method depends on the water condition, algae load, equipment, filtration and whether dead algae can be filtered out or needs to be physically removed. Sunshine Coast Pool Patrol chooses the treatment method that makes sense for the pool, instead of using the same approach every time.
Chlorine Shock Treatment
Used when the pool needs a strong sanitiser boost to break down algae and restore chlorine control.
Algaecide Treatment
Used for active algae blooms where the walls, floor and steps need treatment and brushing support.
Flocculant & Vacuum to Waste
Used when fine suspended algae and debris need to be dropped to the floor and removed directly from the pool.
Filtration Recovery
Used when the pool can recover through treatment, brushing and extended filtration with proper equipment operation.
Equipment matters
We Check Why the Pool Turned Green
If the cause is not fixed, a green pool can come back. That is why Sunshine Coast Pool Patrol checks the equipment and circulation, not just the colour of the water. Pump operation, filter condition, chlorinator performance, salt cell condition, baskets and water flow can all affect whether the pool recovers properly.
Check My Green Pool
Pump & Flow
Checking whether the water is moving properly through the pool and filtration system.
Filter Condition
Checking whether the filter needs backwashing, cartridge cleaning or further attention.
Chlorinator & Salt Cell
Checking whether the system is producing chlorine properly and whether the cell needs cleaning.
Baskets & Debris
Checking whether blocked skimmer, pump or cleaner baskets are restricting circulation.

Green Pool Recovery FAQs
Common questions about green pool recovery, algae treatment, flocculant, vacuuming to waste, chlorine shock, equipment faults and green pool cleaning across the Sunshine Coast.
-
Green pool recovery can take anywhere from 24 hours to several days depending on the algae level, water chemistry, filtration, equipment condition and how much debris is in the pool. Some pools clear quickly after a shock treatment and filtration, while heavier green pools may need algaecide, repeated brushing, flocculant or vacuuming to waste.
-
Pools usually turn green when chlorine drops too low or the water stops circulating and filtering properly. Common causes include pump failure, low water level, blocked baskets, dirty filters, chlorinator faults, stormwater, heavy debris, hot weather, holidays or missed maintenance.
-
Most green pools can be recovered without draining if the pool structure is sound, the equipment is working and the water can be treated and filtered properly. Some severe cases may need extra work, but Sunshine Coast Pool Patrol will assess the pool before recommending the best recovery method.
-
Flocculant helps fine suspended algae and particles drop to the pool floor. Once settled, the pool can be vacuumed to waste so the material is removed from the pool instead of being pushed back through the filter. This is useful when the water contains fine dead algae that will not filter out easily.
-
A green pool can come back if the underlying cause is not fixed. Low chlorine, poor filtration, dirty filters, blocked baskets, low water level, chlorinator problems or poor circulation can all cause algae to return. That is why we check both the water and the equipment during green pool recovery.
-
Yes. Sunshine Coast Pool Patrol checks key equipment during green pool recovery, including pump operation, filter condition, chlorinator performance, salt cell condition, baskets and visible flow issues. Equipment problems are often part of the reason a pool turns green.
-
Not always. Clear water does not automatically mean the pool is balanced or safe to swim in. The water should be tested and balanced first, including chlorine, pH and other key levels, before swimming.
-
Yes. Once the pool is recovered, Sunshine Coast Pool Patrol can recommend a regular servicing option to help keep the water balanced, equipment checked and algae risk reduced moving forward.
